Thomson & Vosper

Meet our artisans

Liz Vosper

At Thomson and Vosper, I am dedicated to providing excellent customer service and creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all our visitors. I hand make most of our lampshades and pendants and love helping our clients light up their home with high quality lighting solutions.

Before I set up the business, I spent much of my career in senior management roles. I have worked in contact centres within the financial services industry, in TV for a short while and in education with 17 years for The Open University - an institution I absolutely love and respect for the difference it makes to students and their lives.

I now live and work in the Peak District where you'll find me in the shop at Baslow, Bakewell either helping customers or running one of our lampshade making workshops.

Inside our shop you'll find products from a range of local talented artisans and together, we're supporting small businesses and doing our best to keep high street shopping alive.

When I'm not working, I'll be spending time with my husband, daughter, our granddoggies and the rest of my wonderful family and friends.

Caroline Powell

At Coppertop Jewellery, I am dedicated to creating beautiful, nature inspired handmade silver and copper jewellery that not only captivates the eye but also aligns with sustainable practices. Based in Sheffield, my mission is to provide unique pieces that reflect both artistry of the natural world and environmental responsibility.

I came to Sheffield in 1993 to study Medicine, but have known the city all my life having my grandparents living here (part of the reason I came!) and love the mixture of city life and abundant green spaces. I've always enjoys doing arts and crafts, and the mindful nature of jewellery making has been particularly beneficial for my mental health, making me a great advocate of using creativity to support mental health.

I have been making jewellery using precious metal clay and silversmithing practices over the past five years. I take great pleasure in the visual of the natural world from the pattern on a petal to stunning sweeping landscapes, and so this is my main influence for my work. I use natural materials or the local landscape to help create many of my pieces. My passion for jewellery making is found in every piece, and this spurred my creation of Coppertop Jewellery after a 25 year career working as a doctor came to a close. In 2024 I was delighted to have been invited to join the Guild of Master Craftsmen and complete my Diploma in Silver Jewellery with the Jewellers Academy.

Peaklass

I feel lucky beyond measure to live and work in the heart of the Peak District National Park, and for many years it has been my pleasure and privilege to record its beauty in all seasons, weathers and moods. I love nothing more than wandering the countryside of this very special place, camera in hand.

I’ve never considered myself a landscape photographer in the traditional sense; more a collector of little moments. The Peak District has no shortage of grand vistas and iconic landmarks, but I have always found the biggest inspiration in the smallest scenes. My photographs are a celebration of those glimpses of life that often pass unnoticed: the light that glances across fields for a split second between clouds, the swirling mists that roll through the valleys on still mornings, or the dappling of early sunshine on quiet lanes.

I share my photographs every day on social media, and I am followed by almost 150,000 people online from across the world. My work has featured on BBC national TV and radio, and in numerous magazines, including Country Living, English Home, and Tudor Places, as well as more locally in Derbyshire Life, Reflections and Pure Peak. In 2024 I was delighted to win the National Parks UK Photographer of the Year Award.

We are proud stockists of Peaklass products within our Baslow shop. There you will find a range of products featuring breath taking photographs including a range of card exclusive to us.

Lou Wright

Hi my name is Lou, and I make Peaki Pots!

Peaki Pots are useful and unique ceramic gifts that feature friendly little animals. They patiently sit and wait in their dish or holder, always ready to look after treats, nibbles, candles, soap or trinkets for you, your friends, your relatives or a special pet.

Having attended ceramic courses for a couple of years, Peaki Pots were initially inspired by making a little treat bowl for my cocker spaniel ‘Peach’, who we affectionately call ‘Miss Peaki’. With her cheeky mini lookalike in the centre of the bowl, Miss Peaki’s pot became very popular with everyone who saw it and I began to make a range of dogs and other animals for family and friends. As their popularity grew, I dedicated a clay room for pot making at my home in the High Peak and thus, the name for my little industry of ‘Peaki Pots’ naturally fell into place!

As I carefully hand craft each Peaki Pot, I can create them to look like a particular adored pet or any other animal you’d love to have as a Peaki Pot buddy. Each pot is made from hardwearing and versatile stoneware clay that goes through a rigorous making process. I start by rolling out and shaping the raw wet clay to form a set of rough bowls. Whilst the clay bowls begin to slowly dry, I create a menagerie of appealing animals, destined to become little Peaki Pot characters. Once the clay pots have become ‘leather hard’ (less wet and slightly stiff), I refine individual bowl details and add a unique little animal. Each pot with its new companion is then carefully air dried and monitored over a few days to ensure the pots dry evenly.

When fully dry the clay goes from brown to light grey and I give each one further refinement with a light sanding if needed before they undergo a first 24 hour ‘bisque’ firing in the kiln. Once cooled, I use specialist glazes to colour the hardened clay pots and paint features on the little animals whose cheeky personalities now start to delightfully emerge. The glazed pots then return to the kiln for a second firing at a higher temperature. This completes the vitrification process which means your Peaki Pot is dishwasher, microwave, food and oven safe and, it will be very happy to go anywhere inside your home or outside in the garden, wherever it is needed!

Nichol Stokes

My name is Nichol and I live and create in my home studio in Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District. I have always been creative and studied art at college, photography at University but life took me down a different career path and I worked in corporate roles with creative outlets being more of a hobby than a business.

My alcohol ink journey began at the beginning of the pandemic whilst stumbling across alcohol inks purely by accident on Instagram. I was mesmerized by the vibrant tones, movement and blends from a medium I had never heard of.

After a few practice runs I was hooked and proceeded to teach myself with many, many hours of painting, learning, observing and experimenting. The possibilities were endless and so exciting and even the disasters taught me valuable lessons.

After receiving several awards both nationally and internationally, with a stream of commissions, Nichol Stokes Designs was born and is now my full time business where I not only create but teach at colleges, art groups, galleries and privately.

My original artworks are all one of a kind pieces which encapsulate the beauty of landscapes, florals and nature. Each painting is created using a hairdryer and that alone means each original painting can never be recreated giving you a totally unique piece.

It is important to me as a small business to support other small businesses therefore all my printed products are sourced using UK based independent businesses.

I believe art should be obtainable for all therefore I have carefully created collections and designed a range of products accessible for all to enjoy.

Shaun

Life in pencil began at an early age for Shaun, he always wanted to be an artist, sketching whenever he could. As an established British artist, Shaun, based in West Yorkshire has clients worldwide. Specialising in highly detailed wildlife and pet portraiture, hand drawn with the humble pencil. He manages to bring to life a truly realistic likeness that captures the character and personality of all his furry and feathered friends.

With a broad creative style and ability to work in different mediums, both by hand and digitally, for Shaun “everything always starts with a pencil”. “I love the ‘hard & black’ (HB) pencil, there are so many subtle differences, fine layers and detail that can be achieved with each stroke.”

Having been a professional artist and creative for more than 30 years, his passion for illustrating took off at school often encouraged by teachers who saw his potential, this continued throughout a varied career from poster art to greeting cards, Designer and illustrator of children’s books, cute plush toys, 3-dimensional characters, to Creative Head and Art Director of Creative Studios across the UK.

You can keep up to date with Shaun's work on Instagram, Facebook or his website.

Sheila

Sheila was born and grew up in Macclesfield, a lovely market town at the foot of the Pennines, surrounded by countryside with plenty of walks and hills to enjoy—especially now she is retired. She held a market stall at the famous Treacle Market for 12 years, stepping away from it more recently. During that time, she made and sold charming wooden rustic cottages, which she still creates in small numbers alongside her scented candles and diffusers, a craft she has been developing for some time.

Sheila became a candle maker after taking over a candle business from a close friend who sadly passed away but had asked her to continue making her much-loved Cosy Wren candles. As a result, candle making has become a proud addition to her CV. I’m sure you’ll agree, the scents of these candles are absolutely divine and very reasonably priced…

A self-confessed home bird, Sheila loves making her house cosy and welcoming—and beautifully scented, especially when she is making candles in the kitchen. She also enjoys cooking (and eating the delicious results) all washed down by the occasional glass of wine or two!
